Anglicare Food Drive

The ANGLICARE FOOD DRIVE is held each year on the 3rd Sunday in June. In 2010, the door-knock is Sunday 20 June.

The Food Drive seeks to raise thousands of items of non-perishable food to assist the work Anglicare does to help struggling families in Western Sydney. Last year, with generous community help from households, schools and businesses, the Food Drive collected over 13,000 items - thank you all!

What Are We Collecting?

Non-perishable food items.

  • tinned goods: soup, meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, baby food etc
  • dry goods: pasta, rice, breakfast cereal
  • drinks: tea, coffee, long-life milk, fruit juice
  • toiletries: soap, toilet paper, tissues, toothpaste, nappies etc

For safety's sake, no glass containers please.

Please note that all items must be within use-by dates.

Please also note that for security reasons, our collectors DO NOT accept cash donations. If you would like to make a financial contribution to the appeal, then they can provide you with an Anglicare donation envelope which you can mail or you can call their donation hotline on 13 26 22.

Who is Anglicare?

Anglicare is a large social welfare, education and advocacy agency of the Anglican Church.

The Food we collect goes to the new Anglicare centre at Mt Druitt, where trained staff and volunteers use it to aid the many families who struggle to make ends meet, and for whom the extra costs of winter would otherwise be the last straw.

When Are We Collecting?

The Anglicare Food Drive door-knock day is Sunday 20 June 2010. After short services at our church centres, appropriately authorised collectors will doorknock in the residential areas of our district.

Nearly all the local supermarkets have agreed to have collection boxes in the days leading up to the collection day.

Most of the local schools also encourage their students to bring in items to the school collection box in the weeks prior to collection day; check with your child.

Each church centre will have a collection box outside, so that items can be dropped off prior to and for a few days after collection day.

Can I Give at Another Time?

You certainly can! We're grateful for your interest. There are at least 3 ways to donate at other times.

1) You can give at local supermarkets and other businesses in the week before the food drive. Schools are also collecting - send some in with your children or grandchildren.

2) There will be collection boxes available outside each of our three church centres in the weeks before and for a few days after the collection.

3) If you can't get here, just contact us (click here or phone the office on 9651-1119) and ask us to send someone 'round to collect your items.

Why are we collecting?

In one sense, you'd hope that anyone, Christian or not, would compassionately seek to help the needy - and we're glad so many do. But Christians have a special reason for doing so. In a word, it's Jesus.

When seeking financial support for poor Christians in Jerusalem, the apostle Paul motivated fellow believers by reminding them of Jesus' example with these words: "You know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich." (2 Cor 8:9, NIV).

He didn't mean that Jesus came to make us wealthy, as some have said, but that if Jesus gave up the riches of heaven to die for us, we who have thus received God's generous forgiveness should use our material possessions to help others. Not to be generous is to head in the opposite direction to Jesus' grace.

You can learn more about Christian attitudes to giving by reading the whole account in 2 Corinthians 8 & 9.
