A friend of mine suggested that if you know just 2 words, you know what you need to know about our faith. Jesus Jesus' name means 'God rescues'. Like any child, it was given to him at birth, that first Christmas. Unlike all others, it marked him out as one who would give himself for sinners. Reading the gospels, we see this in his constant willingness to associate with all sorts of people, but particularly in his sin-bearing death on the cross of the first Good Friday. ...you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins (Matthew 1:21) Christ Christ is a title that has really become part of his name. It means, 'God rules'. Although his many miracles showed this, it is always most strongly associated with his resurrection from the dead on the first Easter Sunday. ...[God] raised him from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come (Ephesians 1:20-21) and so...
A Christian is a person who is convinced God's work in Jesus' death and resurrection was for them. That's what we mean by faith, and such trust in God is enough to save us from our sin and its just punishment, and by forgiveness open up the door to a new life lived for God rather than self. ...if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9)
