Burma Crisis - TEAR Australia Appeal
Thursday, 08 May 2008 12:00

We have received the following from TEAR Australia (an evangelical Christian relief agency)

Dear Friends,

Tens of thousands are dead and millions homeless. The devastation caused in Burma by Cyclone Nargis has been compared to that of the 2004 Tsunami in places like Aceh.

TEAR Australia has committed an initial $250,000 for emergency relief and rehabilitation.

We need your support to promote this appeal in your church or faith community.

TEAR’s Response: World Concern Burma, TEAR’s major partner in the country, has considerable experience in relief and development. They have begun the first stage of their emergency work – delivering medical and support services.

The next stage will be the most critical: assistance with ongoing recovery, reconstruction, rehabilitation and development work with affected communities.

David Allan, Country Director of World Concern Burma and TEAR Australia Fieldworker, reports:

“Very limited communications here. We are coordinating closely with rest of community. Much assessment is underway. Have initiated some first response medical teams and assessment work”

As well as David Allan, TEAR has two other fieldworkers in Burma who will be actively involved in the relief and recovery operations.

Please give:

Pray for the ongoing health and safety of staff and volunteers facing dangerous and difficult work.

Please note: TEAR Australia is not in a position to accept any gifts in kind, or to send any more technical staff from Australia.

Should this appeal be oversubscribed, funds will be allocated to ongoing rehabilitation and community development with World Concern Burma, or to similar project work.
